Fun Things to Do in Ogunquit

By Alison Stovall

Sunning on pure white beaches, browsing through quaint shops, watching the surf break on a rocky coast, deep sea fishing excursions, pleasure cruises… the things that dreams are made of? Actually, this could be a reality – if you choose to vacation in Ogunquit.

Ogunquit is a picturesque vacation destination in Maine. And it offers something for everybody: from several activities for the excited, active vacationer, to enabling a state of complete inactivity for the vacationer who wants to simply unwind and chill.

Ogunquit Museum of American Art:

This museum is like no other; because the beauty of the art is enhanced by the stunning view of the ocean, visible through the glass wall of gallery. This is the only museum in the State of Maine devoted exclusively to the exhibition and collection of American Art. The Permanent Collection includes over 1500 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, photography and graphics.

Ogunquit Playhouse:

The Ogunquit Playhouse has been bringing Broadway to the Beach for 74 years. It has hosted one of the nation's finest summer theatres since the 1930's. With a history of legendary professional theatre showcasing the biggest shows and brightest stars of Broadway, the Playhouse has earned its title of "America's Foremost Summer Theatre."

The Winn House:

This picturesque mansion is a ca. 1785 National Register cape style home of the Ogunquit Sea Captain; James Winn Jr. This strikingly expressive architectural delight was lovingly restored by a committee of dedicated citizens. And thus was established the first historical museum in Ogunquit, the Ogunquit Heritage Museum.

Marginal Way:

This one could waken romance in the most stoic heart. When strolling leisurely along the breathtaking cliff-side Marginal Way, beauty takes on a new meaning. Marginal Way is a scenic footpath bordering the Atlantic Ocean.

Perkins Cove:

Picturesque Perkins Cove is a visual delight. The fact that its working harbor is crossed by New England's only foot drawbridge adds to its old world charm.

Around Ogunquit:

Within Ogunquit everything is an easy walk or nostalgic trolley-ride away. However, for the more adventurous vacationers, Ogunquit is a short drive to factory outlets in Kittery and Freeport (home of L.L. Bean), the shops and museums of Portland and is 15 miles from former President Bush's Kennebunkport Estate.

So enjoy the three miles of platinum white sand beaches, history and natural beauty, swimming and sunning to your heart's delight, because Ogunquit is all about dream vacation!
