Sedation Dentists Banish Fear Of The Dentist For Countless People.
By Donald Saunders
For almost 30 to 40 million people in the USA alone almost nothing you could imagine can come even close to the fear of the dental surgery. For a significant number of of us that terrifying experience, encountered for the first time as a child, stays with us throughout our lives and a visit to the surgery is something only to be considered when the very worst of tooth ache leaves us with no alternative.
There are many reasons for steering clear of the dental office including memories of a bad dental experience, a fear of needles, difficulty in sitting still or controlling your movements, a basic fear of the dentist, and a fear of the dentist's drill to name just some.
Today, however, the arrival of sedation dentists permits us to obtain the dental treatment that we need without that anxiety and those fears.
Sedation dentists do not knock patients out totally, but put them into a very relaxed state so that they don't feel any pain from the work being undertaken and, generally, don't even remember the work being done.
There are various choices open to the patient including:
Oral sedation - A pill is given to a patient approximately an hour before the appointment. Oral sedatives act to relax the patient but without providing pain relief, so an injection of local anaesthetic will also be given.
Intravenous sedation - In this case an injection is given to the patient, as opposed to a pill. As is the case with oral sedation this method does not provide pain relief, so a local anaesthetic injection will also be given.
General anaesthesia - In this case the patient is given an injection to render them unconscious. As the patient is unconscious, no local anaesthetic in necessary for the relief of pain.
Nitrous oxide - Nitrous oxide gas (also referred to as laughing gas) is employed to create a relaxed state. A local anaesthetic is used together with nitrous oxide as pain relief.
Sedation can be used for short and easy procedures lasting up to an hour, or for more complicated multiple treatments, that may last for as long as perhaps six hours.
The advent of sedation dentists is probably one of the largest improvements to dental care in recent years and permits dentists to carry out treatment on patients who wouldn't otherwise consider having treatment.
Individuals who avoid dental work because of anxiety and fear need no longer worry as sedation dentists have made this vital element of our health care system accessible to all. About the Author
