Alligator Cowboy Boots

By Barry Hooper

You work hard. You spend very little on your wardrobe and you need some new boots. Why not indulge yourself and go for a pair of genuine, luxurious, high quality American alligator leather cowboy boots. Alligator is considered the "Rolls Royce" of exotic leathers.

Common old cowhide is tough and cheap, but if you are willing to invest more in a pair of these exotic leather boots, with the proper care, they will last you for many years to come.

The first step is to ensure that you buy genuine American alligator boots. Caiman leather is cheaper but does not have the qualities or value of the classic American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

The leather from the belly of the alligator is considered the most valuable, as it is soft and pliable. The leather from the back is referred to as 'hornback alligator'. The bony protrusions on this type of leather are called osteoderms. Caimans have these osteoderms on the back and the stomach areas. Since bones are not flexible, caiman leather, from the back or the belly is prone to splitting and cracking and only has a limited amount of flexibility, hence it is the less costly of the leathers.

Alligator leather is one of the most beautiful and durable leathers available, but without proper care; your new boots may lose their looks. It will pay you to search for specialist alligator leather conditioner to apply to your boots, which will keep them good as new. The correct conditioner will replenish the natural oils and add water and stain resistance qualities to your boots. Timsboots.com recommends Bick 4 made by Bickmore products.

Alligator leather should be stored in a cool dry place when not in use. If your treasured boots get wet, first wipe off the excess water with a soft cloth. Then it is essential to let them dry naturally and slowly, without any direct sunlight. Turn them over every few hours to allow them to dry evenly. Only when thoroughly and completely dry, apply the special conditioner. Then repeat the conditioning process a couple of days later. You should use conditioner at least once per month to be sure your boots retain their natural oils and don't dry and crack.

Don't be tempted to use any other household cleaning materials or chemicals on your alligator leather boots. The classic burnished finish on alligator leather is quite fragile and should never be exposed to solvents or cleaners. Even conditioners sold for other types of leather can do damage. The chemicals are harsh, and may destroy the finish completely.

These boots are usually not cheap. They may cost you several months' salary. But the feeling you get when you wear them will be priceless. Go Ahead - you deserve a fine pair of alligator cowboy boots.
