The return of the Beauty Contest

By David Miller

Widely regarded as the UK's most prestigious beauty contest, Miss. England www.missengland.info has enjoyed a renaissance in the past few years with celebrity judges and positive press coverage once again casting the event into the public eye. The contest is owned by the Miss World Organisation whose flagship event – Miss World – is still the second biggest television show in the world (behind the Olympics) with in excess of 2 billion viewers across 150 countries worldwide.

While the modern day Miss England has enjoyed a raised profile by attracting celebrity judges such as top glamour model Jordon, Alex Best and Simon Webbe of boy band Blue it was perhaps the 2005 victory of 18 year old of Hammasa Kohistani that provided most of the shows recent headlines – largely due to her going against the beauty competition stereotype.

When many think of competitions such as Miss. England they perhaps cruelly think of the typecast blond bombshell wishing for eternal happiness and world peace. Hammasa certainly quashed any thoughts of pigeonholing contestants into a single bracket. With her striking brunette looks Hammasa became the first ever Muslim winner of Miss. England but it was perhaps the fact the intellectual student speaks six different languages that showed that modern beauty contestants are anything but one dimensional.

When asked about her feelings at being the first Muslim Miss England, she said: "I'm making history and I'm very happy. Hopefully I won't be the last. When they announced that I had won I thought I had misheard. I hoped they hadn't, but it took a second to sink in."

Another reason for the return in popularity of the event is certainly some astute promotional work from the event organisers who have made a number of key alliances within media circles as well as gaining some key sponsorship with established organisations within the world of beauty products. This years event sees The News of the World newspaper www.notw.co.uk become the official media partner.

This years main sponsor is a company well respected in the beauty industry and whose products are widely used by many of the contestants. Naturasun – www.naturasun.com - was approached to be an official sponsor of the event following its tremendous success since it was formed at the turn of the millennia. The company has transformed the sunless tanning industry by providing a high-quality, safe product, which is why Miss. England were keen to get them onboard.

In terms media coverage Miss. England seems to have finally shaken off the snobby opinions of many who felt it was something that should no longer be held in the same prestige by enjoying coverage in popular magazines such as Company and Take a Break.

One often forgotten fact is the amount of positive work the Miss. World organisation as a whole has done for global charities. Since its inception in 1951 the competition has raised an astonishing £2 billion for charity. Indeed should the winner of Miss. England 2006 be lucky enough to win this years competition she will spend much of the next year flying around the world supporting various charities such as President Mandela Fund for children and slightly closer to home Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Miss. World 2006 promises to be the best competition for years – with tickets already selling out fast. The 2006 Miss England finals will be held in Leicester over two days on the 13th and 14th July. The talent and beauty show is being staged at Leicester City Football club on the 13th and on the 14th the final will be held at the Athena in Leicester. For further details of the show visit the Miss. England website – and remember to leave any pre-conceived ideas at home!
