Ford Maverick, a Ford by Any Other Name

By Chuck Smith

In the United States, the name Ford Maverick refers to a vehicle that has been produced during the 1970s. To be more specific, the Ford Mavericks in the United States were produced starting from the year 1970 up until the year 1977. Although this may be so, there are actually two more vehicles that bore the same name but were different vehicles entirely. These two vehicles were produced, sold and marketed in Australia and in Europe. These Ford Maverick vehicles in Australia and in Europe were sport utility vehicles but each was different from each other.

The Ford Maverick was actually designed and produced as a compact car that held a rear wheel drive system. The version that was sold in the United States was actually produced in the United States, in Mexico, and in Brazil. During its introduction, it was actually a sedan that held two doors. However, as years passed, the Ford Motor Company decided to expand the model line up. Then came the sedan version that held four doors this time. There also were several limited editions made available for the Ford Maverick. These limited editions were the Grabber in 1971, the Sprint in 1972, the Luxury Décor Option or more commonly known as the LDO in 1972, and the Stallion in 1976. Come the year 1977, the company halted the production of this vehicle to make way for a new range of vehicles which was the Ford Granada.

Travel to Australia and you would know that there is a Ford Maverick also sold there which was a sport utility vehicle. This Ford Maverick from Australia was actually based on the Nissan Patrol GR. It lived for around a decade, roaming the streets from the year 1988 up until 1998.

In another part of the world, in Europe, another vehicle range was manufactured and marketed under the Ford Maverick name. This European Ford Maverick was actually a rebadged version of the Nissan Terrano II. What is quite funny about this vehicle was that it held no parts that were from the Ford Motor Company except the badge and the name that it held. The rest of the parts and everything in between were from Nissan.
