The Key to a Lifetime of Spontaneous Sex - Vasectomy

By Barry Hooper

Getting a vasectomy is a simple and effective way of male sterilization. Many men are hesitant to undergo the procedure, as it involves the most sensitive part of their body. But there is truly nothing to fear. The procedure itself takes only about twenty minutes; with all the preparation and paperwork, it should take no more than one hour all in all. It is carried out in the out patients clinic of most hospitals, although many doctors also offer the procedure.

There are various reasons a man would like to have a vasectomy, the most obvious of which is the wish not to father any or any more, children. Vasectomy is one of the most popular methods of contraception, both in the United States and worldwide. Although vasectomy is considered permanent, the reversal procedures are getting better and better every year. In effect this means that it can be considered as a semi-permanent solution to contraception. The procedure to reverse a vasectomy is more complicated at the present time. A vasectomy is quite simply, the safest and most effective form of contraception there is.

A No Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV) is the preferred method instead of the more traditional method, as it requires no scalpel, no incisions, reduces bleeding and leaves no scars. Two tiny puncture holes in the scrotum are all it takes. The doctor then lifts out the vas deferens, the tubes leading sperm from the testicles to mix with the semen, and cauterizes them. It is a minimally invasive procedure. Although touted as painless, there is some tenderness, a little bruising and maybe some swelling for two or three days. The doctor will prescribe some simple medication, to minimize any discomfort. You will probably also be advised to place ice packs on the area to reduce any swelling, but this can make it more uncomfortable initially.

To illustrate how successful a vasectomy is, compare the following failure rates. The use of a latex condom has a failure rate of about 12 percent, while the use of a diaphragm has a failure rate of about 18 percent. A vasectomy, however, has a failure rate of only 0.2 percent. It is the safest contraception method of all, other than total abstinence.

A man is not sterile immediately after the procedure. There will always be residual sperm left in the tubes and it will take a number of ejaculations to "flush" the system. After two months or so the doctor will require a semen sample to determine whether the semen is sperm free and the vasectomy has been a success. Until then it is essential to continue using other contraception methods, until you are given the "all clear".

Not only is vasectomy the most reliable contraception method, it is also much less invasive than a female sterilization through tubal ligation, as that procedure has to be done under general anesthesia and bears many more risks. A vasectomy is also much cheaper.

Finally, to allay your fears on the last point. Vasectomy does not alter a man's sex drive. You will still be able to get erections and orgasms and enjoy sex as before, and probably even more, knowing that the act will not lead to an unwanted pregnancy. So what price a lifetime of hassle-free, spontaneous sex? Twenty minutes of your time, plus a couple of day's recovery. A price many people are more than willing to pay.
