Ways to Avoid Distractions While Working from Home
By Greg Carson
In today's fast-paced world, most of the practical professionals have shifted careers and are now into "working-from-home" or what is popularly known nowadays as telecommuting.
Telecommuting is a convenient way of working productively while away from the traditional office. With the aid of modes of communication like telephone, computer or just a pen and paper, one can actually enjoy the flexibility of time working in their own territories.
It is every working mom's and dad's dream to be able to spend a lot of quality time with the kids. And telecommuting has, in fact, answered their wishes. However, there are interruptions and home dramas which need to be steered clear of before one can meet their self-expectations and achieve excellence in their work. Here are some means that may help telecommuters keep away from these disturbances:
• Create a work zone in your house. It may be a small room at the end of the house or any space in the house away from the common area where the family spends time together. Furnish it with your own personal touch so that it will draw you near it. Since it is a cozy area for you, an excellent output can be expected of you.
• Guard your territory. You wouldn't want to be cut short while your artistic prowess is just starting to surface. Post a friendly cartoon character on your office door and explain to the kids that once they see that animated picture, it means you are to be left alone while working. Or a simple message "please doesn't disturb" will keep you away from distractions.
• You need a game plan. Work is work no matter where you operate it. Set your daily goals. Make a schedule and learn how to manage your time. Accomplish what needs to be done on a daily basis. Determining how productive you have been in a day will keep you motivated in making progress.
• Discipline. Know what you want and achieve it! Contain yourself when an interesting-but-not-related-to-your-work-website fascinates you. Never disregard your game plan. You'll get to the finish line only if your mind is focused on it.
Even telecommuting can be exhausting at times. You need to be on top of yourself. Once you've accomplished your goal, you're on for an instant gratification. Delight yourself with a pint of ice cream or have a relaxing walk with the kids…do anything you love to compensate you for your tiny triumph.
