Is today the SMS Era?

By sairohinikumar

The best way to say sweet nothings to your sweetheart seems to be the omnipresent SMS. Which other mode of communication allows you to instantly say something and be sure that the receiver will read it and respond?
SMS( Short Messaging Service) is the eighth wonder of the world today. Young people, old people, children, women, girls and boys use the SMS with varying degrees of difficulty and the youngster seem to be born with the fingers to SMS.
A whole new language has grown up with its own abbreviations, use of special characters and the informal nature of the medium have all contributed to the rise of the SMS Phenomenon.
The addition of the still and video camera has made the mobile a star attraction. Music in the form of MP3s gives the SMS recipients an amazing high. Scandals have followed. But it is still in the infancy stage.
Today's kids are born with a mobile finger. Children as young as five carry their own mobiles. SMS is the new form of communication for the teens. Smiles, photos, music riffs and video bits are the way that leads to SMS.
Those who think that SMS is just a leisure activity between lovers and others, here is proof that you can use the SMS( short messaging service) to socially productive use.
The Jammat-e-Islami Hind, a Muslim NGO has adopted the SMS as the medium to propagate awareness about education among children of poor parents. The campaign is for a week between 19th and 26th June 2005, when over 5000 mobile phone users across the state will be sent SMS messages to send their children to school. The messages include text like 'each one teaches one, 'Each one adopts one child for education'.
The use of SMS as a campaign channel by this organization is not new. But the uniqueness is in a social message being conveyed strongly through SMS for good effect. The organization claims it has succeeded in its previous campaigns as the SMS proved effective, and cost was most economical while the messages were sent instantly. Nearly 4000 parents and their children were motivated adopted towards education. The campaign also includes door-to-door contact, street meetings, and seminars.
This year Jammat wants to ensure that 15,000 children including dropouts go to school. A laudable objective indeed!
So why don't other socially active and charitable organizations use SMS? It does make sense, what with the high costs of communication through the regular channels these days.
