Does Your Web Site Help or Hinder Your Home Based Business

By Hank and Dot Stevens

Have you stopped to think that your web site is the first impression you make on your potential customer or client? Just as it is with a personal encounter, you do not get a second chance to make a good first impression.

Have there been times you have said too much, been too loud and tried to control the conversation when introduced to someone? These same things can happen with your web site without you realizing it.

Some things you should consider about your website:

1. Pop-ups. Are these your friend or foe? Nothing can be more annoying than trying to read about a product or a service offered and being constantly bombarded with pop-ups. If people aren't allowed the opportunity to see your main page because you are trying to "sell everything else in the world", then you a using too many pop-ups. Believe me, I have probably missed some very good web sites because I couldn't wait to hit the "X" on the site to get away from all the advertisements and free offers.

2. Music or Sound. Have you visited a site that would load with such loud music or talking, it could make you jump out of your chair? You aren't trying to scare your visitor to death, but to entice him to stay and visit a little longer. Don't run your prospect off by breaking the sound barrier. I think the option to "click here" to listen to a message is a better option.

3. Font Color and Background Color. Please pay special attention when choosing your colors. Make certain your words aren't lost on the page. It is almost impossible to read yellow on yellow, but I have actually seen this on a web site. Make it easy on your visitors and choose your colors wisely. Check them to see how they look in different browsers. Remember, not everyone has perfect vision.

4. Links. Check and re-check your links. Make certain none are broken. It makes your business seem unprofessional if your links go to "no where".

5. Layout. Do not try to pack a page. Leave some space. Break up your columns. It is very confusing when a page has no blank spaces.

6. Don't Seem Greedy. Don't have everything on your page screaming "Send me money". Visitors to your web site do not want to feel that all you are after is their money. Instead, be helpful. You will gain your visitors trust and confidence if you let them know you are there for them and are willing to help them.

Look at your web site through the eyes of your visitors. Yes, I know it is your baby, but everyone will not know all the long hours and hard work you put into it. Look at it and be very critical. Really take your web site apart and study it. Is there anything there that may be annoying to other people? Is this worth losing your prospect?

Your web site is yours, but is also the way your present your business and yourself to the world.
Make a very good first impression!
