How to save money

By Florie Lyn Masarate

Here are some money saving tips that people can use with their printing and printing related needs.

How to save money on…

Printing plates. Metal plates are more expensive, but they can last longer and has greater accuracy. On the other hand, paper plates are more suitable for shorter runs without using closing or touching colors. Plan your design so you will know which of these plates will be more effective for your printing needs.

Envelopes and self-mailers. Make a newsletter or brochure into a self-mailer to be able to save on envelope and postage costs as well. Consider the size and shape of the document that is needed to be enclosed in an envelope. Custom-sized envelopes can add to the cost and complexity of the printing job.

Diecuts. Many printers already have standard dies for common cuts. Like envelopes, custom-made dies can increase the cost of the piece. Inquire about the custom dies used in their precious printing jobs that may be able to work with your design. This can save you a lot of money.

Imposition. You can save money on imposition by reducing the cost of adding a third color on a job. Try to run black with blue on side. Then try to run black with green on the other side. This will lessen the extra charge of having to mix all these colors together on each side.

Binding. The steps needed in binding are hole punching, scoring, folding, collating, stitching, gluing and trimming. It follows that the more steps involved, the greater the cost incurred. Try to find a binding method that can reduce the need for extra binding steps. You will realize that you get to save more money this way.

There are also some binding jobs that machines cannot fold. Hand folding will be necessary and will definitely add to the cost. Talk to the printer about the standard folds they use that they input into your printing job design.

Know about the less durable options of binding such as saddle-stitching for booklets. They are less expensive compared to thermal, wire or perfect bound methods. Also, take note that ring, glued or stitched binders as well as soft or hard covers add to the overall cost.

These are just some of the steps you can take in order to save costs on your printing jobs. Think of other ways that can help you save more but not really sacrificing quality in the process.
