Finding Short Term Housing.

By Adam Smith

So you are looking to build a house? Or move into a bigger house? Whatever the case, I understand your problem. Before you can make the financial commitment on a new house, you need to sell the house you are currently living in. That just makes good financial sense. The problem then is this, what do you do when your house finally sells, but your new house will not be finished for another 3 months? The answer is short term housing. Short term housing is not always easy to find, but it can be found.

A simple definition of short term housing might present it as housing that can be rented or leased for relatively short period of time, say 3, 6, or 12 months. With the growth of the real estate market in the United States, the popularity and need for short term housing has grown considerably.

Real estate investors are constantly on the lookout for good real estate investments, and there is always a good supply of homes on the market that would serve as great short term housing solutions for new home builders. Homes that are a few years old, offer modest accommodations and a nice neighborhood are very attractive for short term housing.

If you are in the market for short term housing, check out the classifieds of your local newspaper. More than likely there will be numerous listing of rental homes that can leased for the short time period you desire. As you are looking for temporary dwelling, be sure to look for a house that will fit your needs. Although you will not be in the house very long, there is nothing more frustrating than renting a home that is too small or one that just doesn't fit your family. You want to make the best of this short term housing, so if you have kids look for one with a yard. If you work from home, then obviously you will need short term housing that provides you with an adequate office space to continue your work uninterrupted.

As you are searching for short term housing that fits your needs, pay attention to the monthly rates of each candidate. Though the monthly rate is not terribly important since you will only be living there for a short time, you want to make sure you are getting a good value for what you are paying. As general rule, avoid short term housing that is extremely cheap or expensive. Most likely, neither will provide a good value. Typically houses in the middle price range will offer a good amount of square footage at a fair rate.

Before you move into your short term housing, you might consider renting a storage unit. Chances are you won't have room to store all of your belongings in your rental house so the most economical solution is to rent a nearby storage unit. As you are packing be sure to separate the items you can't live without from the things you don't mind leaving in storage for a few months. If you are careful in the packing process, you will find that you can take most of the necessary items to your short term housing solution and live comfortably while you anxiously await the completion of your new house.
