Smart Shopping for a Down Duvet
By Katie Curtis
'Tis the season to be…warm and cozy! With the winter season soon upon us, it might be time to consider purchasing a down duvet. There is nothing quite like it, my friends. A down duvet is so much more than a simple blanket, and once you have had one there is simply no going back. If you are giving some thought to buying one, think no more. Just read on, and pay special attention to the following tips.
You want to be sure that your duvet is filled with goose or duck down, as only the top grades will stay fluffy for years to come. The color of the down is not important in the least. FYI – Eiderdown, from the endangered Eiderdown duck, is almost black in color!
When you are in the shop, be sure to ask the salesperson about the exact down weight. Many manufacturers will mix the down with feathers during the manufacturing process. Avoid these duvets, as they of a considerably inferior quality. Feathers add weight to the duvet, but do not provide the warmth that down does. Feathers also trap the down filaments, preventing them from expanding to their maximum fullness.
You will also want to consult the salesperson regarding the thread count of the outer shell. Down-proof 100% cotton ticking with 230 threads per inch is ideal, as it will prevent the down from escaping and will maintain well with general usage.
Another thing to consider is the way the sections of the duvet are laid out. The best duvets have long, high, and wide tunnels so the down can move freely. Down needs room to expand, or "loft" as they say. The warmth down provides results from its ability to loft and fill with air.
Keep in mind that a down duvet is not just another household purchase; it is an investment. Try to make your purchase from a reputable shop that will provide you with a written guarantee. Pure, superior quality down is rather expensive. You will likely pay approximately $50.00/pound. If the price seems too good to be true, it is likely too good to be true and you are wasting your money.
One further note regarding down is that it is virtually allergy free. Many people with allergies to feathers are wary of down. The allergy is usually with the quill of the feather or the quill mites, and down has no quill…..just pure, heavenly fluff! Top quality down has been washed, sterilized, and is virtually allergy free. Sweet dreams! About the Author Katie Curtis is a business consultant, who spends a lot of time on the road.
