Design methods as walls in the printing prison

By Florie Lyn Masarate

In the printing industry, creativity is one of the things that should kept changing and evolving. With the many designs and styles already done, it is quite certain that you want your work to at least have a lasting impact to the people. And of course, you would not want to be caught dead using the same style that many others are using. It is always best to have one of your own. Unique one too. To be able to do this, you need to have a design concept that you can follow and will serve as your guideline in the process. These methods are simply set of steps you can refer to without having to think every time you create a printing design. Your design method should remove the need to check every now and then if everything has been covered. It also allows you to be consistent. This is very helpful if you want to create something that is inherently you. It should have your signature. Design methods gives your clients an impression that you are well-organized and has set aside some time for their work to done properly. Lastly, one of the unknown purposes of design method is simply because it gives you some rules to break. The digital age has brought with them less and less rules to follow. In the first place, there are lots of tools and equipments that can do the job for you so why bother doing it. In the old days of printing, people have to work out the complexity of CMYK, RGB and Pantone just to get the desired print they wanted. There was refresh or undo buttons they can use if ever they would want to try and change something. And there was also no edit and save button. But with the digital technologies of today, these problems are history. Everything can be done by click. The Leaning Tower of Pisa can be "unleaned" today. Mona Lisa can be made to laugh. In other words, every seemingly flaw in the prints, drawing and designs are perfected by just clicking. That is the absence of methods in the digital age to you. Absolute freedom. But with this freedom comes a price. It is scary to think that there is nothing can grab hold on to anymore. Absence of methods to follow, and break, is like grabbing at an empty space. It sure is easier if you have something to serve as a backbone especially in the printing world that is getting complicated by the minute. Just think of it this way. Not having any design method is like having a prison with no walls. Is it freaky or what? For comments and inquiries about the article visit http://www.uprinting.com
