Be safe when traveling

By Jeff Lakie

There are some great safety devices to use when traveling. Here are
some you should consider to enhance your personal safety.

1. Use a money belt to keep your valuables close to you to
eliminate pickpockets. Even then, don't bring all your money
with you when you are out and about. If you should lose your
money belt, you don't want to lose all your money.
2. A hidden compartment safe can be purchased online for as
little as $10 or $20 and they look like regular household
objects that have a secret opening in the bottom to let you put
your valuables. Buy a hidden compartment safe that matches
the type of thing people might travel with, such as a can of
pop. Just make sure that the hotel staff do not mistake it for
trash and throw it out! Perhaps, keep your valuables in your
hidden compartment safe and keep the safe in the hotel bar
fridge.
3. A door jam or door chime are two great personal security
devices to have when you're staying at a hotel. Both of these
objects are placed by the door and are activated when
someone opens the door. For example, the door chime makes
a sound when it senses movement because it is hung right on
the door handle. Alternatively, the door jam looks very similar
to any regular triangular door jam and is put very close to the
closed door. When someone opens the door it hits the door
jam and sets off an alarm that will scare them away and wake
you up.
4. For when you are out and about, you should carry a personal
alarm with you. These are small, light alarms on a wrist-strap
that give off a piercing shriek when the wrist-strap is pulled
from the alarm case. This will scare off most attackers and
alert passersby to your situation.
5. Another option, if it is allowed where you are traveling, is to
carry pepper spray. However, you should check local
regulations first to know whether or not it is legal to carry and
use.
6. If pepper spray is not legal to use, there are other options that
you can carry that are perfectly legal to carry. If you are feeling
less than secure about your personal safety, just purchase any
small can of bright spray paint and when attacked, you can
spray your attacker in the face. The paint in their eyes should
give you enough time to get away and report the attack.
Authorities will have no problem identifying your attacker
when you report them!
7. Avoid carrying weapons to defend yourself, especially if you
are traveling outside of North America. This includes real-
looking fake weapons.

Your personal safety and the safety of your belongings is paramount to
you enjoying your holiday and returning home intact. Follow these
simple steps to help you maximize your safety and enjoyment.
